Meet Dr. Jay
Dr. Collado, also known as Dr. Jay, is a Board Certified Family Medicine with additional training in integrative medicine. From a young age, he always knew he would follow his parents footsteps (both psychiatrists) in the medical field. He attended UCSB for his undergraduate degree and De La Salle University in the Philippines for medical school. He decided to focus on family medicine because of his interest in preventative care and completed his family medicine residency at University of Tennessee in Memphis. After graduating from his residency program, Dr. Collado worked as a Hospitalist in Las Vegas, NV. He then relocated to Southern California and has been working with the same medical group since 2009. He received his CAQ certification in Integrative & Holistic Medicine in 2013 by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM). For more than 14 years, he has enjoyed helping the most challenging patients with complex chronic and acute medical issues using traditional medicine skills learned from his training. However in recent years, he has taken a more holistic and integrative approach to patient care. He believes in the body’s inherent ability to heal and utilizes evidence-based integrative medicine to maximize this capacity.
Dr. Collado is passionate about using food as medicine and exploring how stress, sleep, spirituality, relationships and the environment are all connected to health. He has struggled with anxiety, stress, and profound grief after caring for and losing both of his parents in a short period of time. What he learned throughout his journey is that grief goes beyond the emotional impacts and invades the realm of very physical symptoms, such as eczema, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, insomnia, and increased inflammation. He believes even more now in the power of integrative medicine as he has used yoga, a breathwork practice, meditation, and exercise to help with his nervous system regulation and stress management. He has turned to herbs like passionflower, rhodiola, and brahmi to help find balance, clarity, and calmness. Powerful fungi like lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, maitake, cordyceps, and turkey tail are staples for him and his family. He believes in their cognition-enhancing, mood-boosting, immune-strengthening, and stress relieving properties and is passionate about educating his patients on how to easily incorporate them into their wellness routines.
Dr. Collado is open-minded and willing to listen to his patient’s wants and needs in order to optimize their health and well-being. He also wants to offer a safe and supportive space for men, especially fathers, to check-in with themselves and acknowledge how they are really doing. As he learned, fathers struggle with their own life changes and losses. Those moments need attention and care. Modeling self-care and prioritizing one’s health is the best way you can take care of yourself. He has learned that finding a balance of roles across life areas, such as work, home, and family responsibilities is crucial to maintaining good mental health and overall health.
In his spare time, Dr. Collado enjoys spending time with his friends and family, especially his wife and three children, Bodhi, Shanti, and Irie, along with their puppy, Ziggy. His other hobbies include surfing, basketball, golf, yoga, and traveling to their permaculture farm in Costa Rica.
