Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)

What is the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) test and why are using it for all our clients now?

The HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) is a safe and non-invasive test that measures the mineral content of hair. Just a small sample of hair provides a reflection of the whole body’s mineral status over 3-4 months, particularly intracellular (inside the cells) activity, which is difficult to measure via a blood test, urine analysis, or saliva test. The test measures the levels and ratios of nutrient and toxic minerals found in hair. You’ll see what minerals are out of balance individually, but also with each other because certain mineral work together. When we look at these specific ratios, we can learn so much about how one’s body is functioning and why you feel the way you do. It also offers insight into your specific metabolic rate, energy levels, adrenal and thyroid function, inflammation, heavy metal toxicity, and immune function. Replenishing and rebalancing minerals is an important step to healing your body and achieving optimal health.

Why minerals?

Minerals are essential for growth, healing, vitality, and well-being. They provide structural support in bones and teeth, they maintain the body’s pH and water balance, nerve activity, muscle contractions, energy production, and enzyme reactions. Minerals have a major impact on metabolism, digestive function, endocrine (hormone) activity, and so much more. Each mineral plays important roles and they work together - not one mineral functions alone. They are the “spark plugs" of our body.

  • Our bodies use zinc and sodium to make stomach acid. These minerals are fundamental to being able to digest and absorb the nutrients in your food. Zinc is also a critical component of digestive enzyme production.  These enzymes help break down food into smaller molecules so the nutrients are more easily absorbed.

  • Zinc is also involved in the production, storage, and secretion of insulin and is necessary for growth hormones.

  • Magnesium is required for normal muscular function, especially the heart. A deficiency has been associated with an increased incidence of heart attacks, anxiety and nervousness.

  • Potassium is critical for normal nutrient transport into the cell. A deficiency can result in muscular weakness, depression and lethargy.

  • Excess sodium is associated with hypertension, but adequate amounts are required for normal health.

  • High copper has been associated with short-term and chronic depression, along with high levels of calcium.

Ideally, minerals exist in a critical balance in the body. But this balance is easily thrown off, especially over time when not addressed. Dysfunction commonly arises as a result of an abnormal balance between minerals. And not only do minerals work together, they also work with other nutrients in the body. Vitamins in particular are synergistic to minerals and act as coenzymes.

The HTMA is the window into our physiology, our psychology, and revealing our pathology. HTMA may be the most important health test that exists. Only when you and your doctor know for sure your mineral status and important ratios can you adapt your diet, minerals and supplements to work toward proper balance."

-Dr. Robert Thompson, MD

I already eat healthy. Don’t we get the minerals we need from a balanced diet?

Ideally, we should get all the minerals we need from a balanced diet. Unfortunately, in today’s world, this is impossible. Modern farming techniques, fertilizers, and depleted soils reduce the mineral content of foods. Environment pollutants, toxic cleaning products, chemical food additives, pregnancy, and stressful lifestyles can also greatly impact our nutritional status. Other mineral imbalances are caused by synthetic vitamin and mineral supplementation, foods fortified with synthetic vitamins and minerals, medications,  and more.

Lastly, heavy metals can place a ton of stress on the body, especially our detoxification systems, and impact our health in so many ways. We’re all exposed to them, but if our bodies are stressed and our mineral reserves depleted, we are less able to effectively deal with them. Once they accumulate, problems arise. Problems associated with heavy metal and body and liver toxicity include: fatigue, muscle weakness or pain, chronically recurring infections, infertility, nausea, allergies and intolerances, chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, depression, hormonal imbalances, anemia, low zinc and other mineral deficiencies, thyroid problems, ADHD, and birth defects.

General signs & symptoms of mineral depletion:

  • Low energy/fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Water retention/bloating

  • Brain fog

  • Sluggish thyroid

  • Digestive issues

  • Low stomach acid

  • High urination

  • Poor stress resistance

  • Poor sleep quality

  • Mood imbalances

  • Always fighting a cold

Why do we test the hair?

As hair forms, it’s exposed to our body’s internal environment. Once it reaches the surface of the skin, it’s outer layers harden and this locks in the metabolic products that accumulated when it initially formed. The body unloads excess minerals and heavy metals in the hair in order to keep them away from vital organs. In other words, hair contains a blueprint, a lasting record of mineral status and nutritional metabolic activity, that occurred over it’s growth period. The HTMA can show us what’s going on in the body over the last 3-4 months.

Why not just test the blood?

We absolutely believe in bloodwork and require recent labs during our initial intake session, but we have learned that blood shows a snapshot of what is happening right now. And what shows in the blood can shift day-to-day based on diet, stress, exercise, sleep, and more. The blood is simply not an accurate way to look at mineral levels over time because the body works to maintain balance and will pull minerals from the cells in order to keep levels adequate in the blood. Blood is always balancing itself, even at the expense of the cellular reserves.

Even if you had a blood test and your calcium levels were average, it doesn't mean your calcium is in a proper balance inside your tissues. It won't show up out of range in your blood until it's more serious.

What lab do you use?

We use Trace Elements to complete the sample analysis. We have specifically chosen this lab because they do not wash your hair sample after receiving it. Why is that important? Many labs wash the hair samples in acetone solution prior to analyzing their mineral content. This can affect some of the mineral levels, giving you less reliable results. You can see what a sample report looks like here.

What does a HTMA test reveal?

  1. Mineral deficiencies and imbalances

  2. Heavy metal toxicity

  3. Metabolic rate (fast or slow oxidation)

  4. Optimal macronutrient ratios (for your oxidation type)

  5. Adrenal & thyroid function

  6. Stage of stress (alarm, resistance, or exhaustion)

  7. Nervous system imbalances

  8. Inflammation

  9. Energy levels

  10. Blood sugar imbalances

Who can benefit from HTMA?

Everyone! It’s non-invasive and can be done at home with only one teaspoon of hair. We have used the HTMA with the following clients and each has had great success in bringing their main health concerns back into balance by following the nutritional guidelines and lifestyle adjustments they receive from us.

Children: By now, you know that minerals are essential for growth and development. Balancing minerals has shown to support the child’s behavior challenges, learning difficulties, concentration, and sleep. Children respond very well to nutritional support when it comes to balancing their minerals and a very gentle removal of toxic metals.

  • Symptoms of mineral imbalance in children: mood dysregulation, meltdowns, tantrums, attention issues, skin issues, fatigue, stomach aches, food cravings, and more.

Fatigue/Brain Fog: HTMA can reveal crucial insights into low energy. Addressing mineral imbalances and detoxifying heavy metals can greatly improve and balance energy. We believe in bloodwork, along with HTMA, when it comes to balancing our client’s energy. This combination gives us a much clearer picture of how one’s energy system is functioning.

  • Symptoms of iron and copper dysregulation: extreme fatigue, inflammation, brain fog, migraines, achy joints, and more.

Mood Dysregulation: Minerals are the precursors to our neurotransmitter formation. High copper levels are associated with an increased incidence of short-term and chronic depression. Copper toxicity depletes zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B6, which are required for serotonin production. High levels of toxic metals have also been known to mimic certain psychiatric disorders. Balancing the minerals through nutrition has been shown to greatly support mood dysregulation in our clients.

  • Symptoms of mood dysregulation: irritable or angry mood most of the day, severe temper outbursts, issues with daily functioning due to irritability at home, in school, or with their peers, feeling sad, empty, anxious and cranky, loss of pleasure in most or all activities, feelings of worthlessness, etc.

Female Hormone Challenges: Hormone testing can tell us if a specific hormone is high or low and what pathway is most dominate. But HTMA can tell us why that hormone may be dysregulated. Hormones, which are chemical messengers, rely on certain minerals to function properly. Zinc is needed to support progesterone, insulin, and testosterone and copper is needed to help balance estrogen and energy. Copper is needed for overall energy production. Magnesium, sodium, and potassium are all needed for healthy adrenal function. Pregnancy, while such a blessing, can also drain our minerals. If you have ever breastfed, your body is even more depleted. Our minerals are drained from the sleepless nights, constantly caring for other humans, and not prioritizing down time. Supporting moms is near and dear to me because it benefits the whole family!

  • Symptoms of mineral imbalance in females: fatigue, anovulation, PCOS, endometriosis, weight gain, irregular cycles, intense PMS, and more.

General Health Conditions: Mineral imbalances and toxic elements can aggravate many health conditions such as high cholesterol, thyroid imbalances, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, blood sugar imbalances, osteoporosis, migraines, and more.

What does the hair sample process entail?

Proper hair collection is crucial for you to get accurate results! We recommend you wash your hair four to six hours prior to taking the hair sample. Use a regular shampoo or a clarifying shampoo. While still in the shower, rinse hair with distilled water (you can buy a gallon for $2.99 at the grocery store or CVS). Hair should be air-dried and clear of any additional hair products like leave-in conditioners or serums. The most ideal circumstance would be to wash hair in the morning, rinse with distilled water, air-dry, and take the sample around lunch before doing anything strenuous. Please do not exercise or sweat during this time. Heavy sweating before taking sample can raise sodium and potassium readings.

The portion of hair to be collected should be untreated - not permed, dyed or bleached. If all of the hair has been chemically treated, wait until sufficient new virgin growth has emerged to allow collection. The hair should also be free of all gels, oils and hair creams prior to sample collection. Some anti-dandruff shampoos may affect some of the mineral results, as well as taking an Epsom salt bath, so we ask you to refrain from these for a few days before taking the hair sample.

Use clean scissors and cut as close to the scalp on the back of your head. You do not need one big chunk from just one place. You can take small portions from at least four to five different locations of the scalp and combine them. Keep one inch of the hair ( from scalp side) and discard the rest. Collect enough hair to tip the paper scale provided in your kit, which is about one teaspoon of hair. Place hair sample in the provided paper envelope. Don’t have enough hair on your head? Pubic and other body hair can be used, but should only be used as a last resort if scalp hair is not available.

If you live locally in Orange County and would like us to help you, we are happy to do this in-person with you.

How does your HTMA Program work?

  1. Simply follow the prompt below to place your order or click here. Orders are placed on a private and secure server. All information is private and remains private. You will need to provide your address where you would like the kit mailed, unless you choose to pick up the kit from us in San Clemente, CA. You will receive an email with additional information on collecting your hair sample and other important instructions.

  2. Get a pre-stamped HTMA testing kit from Pura Vida Integrative Health. This is when you’ll snip one teaspoon of hair and then mail the sample. It is very important you follow the instructions carefully, especially if you have colored/bleached hair. It will take 2-3 weeks to get results from the lab.

  3. Fill out a Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ) which takes roughly 45 minutes and our Pura Vida Integrative Client Intake that will provide details to us about your family health history, your health concerns, current supplements and medications, stressors, sleep quality, symptoms, your mental and emotional health, and what has and hasn’t worked for you in the past.

  4. When the results come back, you’ll have a 60-minute consultation (in-person or virtual) to review your HTMA results, metabolic trends, stress patterns, and how your different body systems are functioning. We then do a deep analysis and look at the total picture of what’s going on with your body, so we can connect the dots to why you’ve been feeling the way you have. We will develop a mineral balancing plan for you, along with nutritional and lifestyle recommendations. The dietary recommendations are based on the findings in your HTMA test and are the most important part of this program. Everyone requires specific amounts and types of protein, healthy fats, cooked vegetables, and for some, limited grains. This one hour consultation can be done in-person or over the phone.

  5. Email Support We will email you a summary of your custom protocol that we discussed during the consultation and you will have access to email support for one month following your consultation.

    How soon should I retest?

We recommend retesting 4-6 months after your first HTMA program to measure change and progress. A retest gives us the ability to put the puzzle pieces in place after implementing your nutritional protocol. While you wait for the results, we will send you a nutritional assessment that will allow us to know how you are feeling, the changes you're seeing, and where you might still be struggling. Once we receive your results back from the lab, we'll have a 45-minute consultation to go over the plan! If necessary, new nutritional, supplemental, and lifestyle goals will be applied. This can be done in office or over the phone. You are receiving a retest discount for the kit and the consultation.
